Description
This verbena has clusters of purple flowers borne on long graceful stems. It blooms from early summer to the frost in autumn and grows best in full sun or light shade. It looks good in mixed borders and works well with most plantings. Verbena bonariensis is very attractive to butterflies and bees. It flowers in summer of the first year from seed if started in early spring under cover. The flower makes a good cut flower, and can be dried for dried floral arrangements.
Sowing advice
Sow in spring. Sow the seeds on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays.
Cover with a thin layer of soil. (they need dark to germinate) Propagate or place somewhere warm approx 20°C. Keep moist but do not waterlog. Germination should take between 20-40 days, but can be erratic. Transplant each seedling once it has its first set of true leaves into 7.5cm pots with free-draining compost until large enough to plant outside after the last frost..
