This selection is a mix of colours, and has flowers which are fringed, and semi double in shades of cream, pink through to red shades light blue to violet shades. The plant flowers in its first year from seed. The flowers can be used for floral arrangements as can the fluffy decorative seed heads , which look a bit like a witches’ bad hair day. The plant blooms in the early spring, and prefers well drained soil in part shade or sun. They form a neat cut-leaf clump, and can tolerate short periods of drought once they are established, and relish soil which is a little bit on the dry side. They withstand frost well, and are pretty much untroubled by pests or diseases. They are a low maintenance plant, which are quite easy to grow from seed.
Sowing advice
Sow the seeds in trays or pots on the surface of a moist , good quality seed raising mix. We suggest you buy a small amount of seed raising mix from your local garden centre as it will be already sterilised for you. Don’t cover the seeds as they require light to germinate. Water them by using a mister, or water them from the bottom of the pot, so as not to drive the seeds below the surface of the soil. Ideal temperature is 15-20 deg C . They usually take about approx 4 weeks to germinate. If they don’t germinate then enclose the pot in plastic and put it in the fridge at about 4 deg C for about 3 weeks .
