Description

These seeds are  open pollenated from Hippeastrum ‘Royal Velvet’, a plant which has large deep velvet red flowers above glossy dark green leaves. It flowers in late spring to early summer, and is a spectacular pot plant.  Its bulbs can withstand light frost . In warmer northern areas it can be grown outside. Snails and slugs love its luscious flowers and leaves and will make short work of a plant , so protect the plant if you are growing outdoors. Hippeastrums are very good cut flowers, and last for at least 2  weeks in a vase .

Sowing advice

Sow indoors at any time, ideally in spring. Sow in trays or pots onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover with mix, and keep moist but not waterlogged.  Ideal temp 18 – 20°C. Germination takes 2-6 weeks approx., but can take longer so do not discard the seed tray. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to small pots. Acclimatise and plant into large pots or outside when big enough.
