This perennial plant has large spires up to about 120cm from which hang pure white bell shaped waxy flowers which are scented. They  make an excellent cut flower, and are borne in late summer when everything else is looking a little tatty. It is a South African native and forms bulbs, which can look good in a largish  pot . It prefers a position in full sun and a soil which is moisture retentive. As a perennial it will lose its large strappy green leaves in winter and die down completely, only to resurface in the spring .

Sowing advice

Sow in early autumn or late winter and early spring . Sow in trays or pots in moist seed raising mix. Sow onto the surface of the mix and do not cover as light aids germination. Keep moist and at about 20 degrees C. Seeds will germinate in 3 to 4 weeks. Protect the seedlings from frost.
