Approx 12-24 months after it is sown, this plant produces spectacular spires of approx 3-4 m which have a myriad of small blue flowers , which the bees love. Note that these seeds are open pollinated, and so the plants may not all be blue flowered.
It will set seed if fortune favours the gardener, but the seed is not prolific.
Sowing advice
Sow seeds at any time in trays or pots
Sow in moist well-drained seed raising mix. As this seed requires light to germinate, cover very sparingly with mix. Ideal temp. 12-20°C. Germination takes 2-6 weeks, and can take up to 12 weeks. When seedlings are large enough to handle pot on into a gritty compost containing very little organic material before planting out in a well-drained, sheltered spot or a large container that may be taken in during the winter in colder areas . Plants usually flower 24 months after sowing.
