Description
This plant is a scrambling vine , able to climb to about 2 metres. It is considered to be one of the plants that are indispensible in a garden by many plantspeople . Chorizena cordata transforms itself when it flowers with a wonderful display of red, orange and yellow pea-shaped flowers. The flowers are produced at the end of the leaves in racemes of 20 or more blooms. As it is a scrambling , lax stemmed shrub, it is best grown as an understorey plant in a garden where it can take advantage of other larger shrubs to support it . This plant makes an excellent subject for a dull slightly shady area with dappled light in the garden, as it will make a great splash of colour in late winter for you, brightening the area. Cut the plant back by about a third after flowering to get new growth and flowers in the next year. It can withstand some dryness, but performs better with some water from time to time.
Sowing advice
Pre treat the seed by placing them in a container and pouring water which has just boiled over them. Leave them to soak for 12 hours.
Sow the seeds in spring at about 20 Deg C in pots or trays , after being soaked. Cover the seeds lightly with seed raising mix. Keep them moist but not waterlogged. Germination should occur in about 2-4 weeks. If the seeds don’t germinate set them aside somewhere in a light place at about 20 deg C . They often choose the ideal time to germinate themselves, despite our best efforts.
