This long lived and trouble free plant bears a myriad of blue pea type flowers, which are somewhat like those of a lupin, and grows to a small bush. It is almost insect free and disease resistant making it a low maintenance plant for the garden.  Its flowers are good for cutting and as an additional bonus its seed pods make an attractive accent in floral arrangements.

It was historically used for medicinal purposes by the Native American people.

It has won the award of garden merit from the Royal Horticultural Society, and was also selected as the plant of the year by the Perennial Plant Association.
