This is a very handsome flowering plant, to approx 1 m high , which has dense round flower heads about 10 cm across. The flowers are a violet colour and one globular flower head is made up of numerous star shaped small flowers.  It is often confused with Allium hollandicum. The flowers are pollinated by bees and other flying insects. The plant prefers light sandy well drained soils, and needs full sun to prosper.
